Is our Solar System saving us thaaat much fuel?

E-mail Print PDF

So the solar system in the landcruiser is working well - you can read my write up on it for one month on here;

But now I have worked out some fuel consumption figures, for before the trip and what we have driven so far (just south of Cairo).

The headline is that our fuel consumption has indeed improved since doing the Solar conversion!

Today after reading my emails in Cairo I have found out that I have won an award!

I am the "Archant Environmentalist of the Year" for my work for SolarAid and raising the profile of the charity through this trip.

Solar installations on the Trip

E-mail Print PDF

One of the aims of the trip is to prove how well Solar PV technology works, there are still many misplaced misconceptions that it doesn't work.  Here are some installations so far.  All of these are working and it shows how flexible the technology is and what a wide range of uses there are for it.  It is also interesting to see the number of different companies who have invested in it.

Hopefully this will help you to understand how good this technology is and donate to SolarAid @ www.justgiving.com/overlandinthesun

Sudan
Sudan has some of the best conditions in the world for Solar, its proximity to the equator means that it receives amazing sunlight and it also less effected by the cloud and rain that you often find right on the equator.  Our Solar system has been amazing here!

Most of the Sudanese electricity is from dams on the Nile - while low carbon this is problematic in many ways.  Internationally, the more dams Sudan builds on the Nile this can effect the dams in Egypt.  Upstream, Ethiopia is starting to build dams on the Blue Nile - which will impact the Sudanese dams.  Nationally; as Sudan is such a vast country, areas away from the Nile do not have electricity due to transmission costs - these areas are also often the poorer areas (Darfur and the South) and in need of cheaper electricity to prosper.  Locally, dams cause problems for farmers, in the North farms complained of ever changing river heights making it  almost impossible to farm land long term with better techniques.

One Month on - the Solar System

E-mail Print PDF

How is our Solar System working, one month on?

The system was made up simply with some guidance from my mate, Lachlan, at Solar Century and me just seeing what fitted where! No real measurements where taken, no complicated computer aided design – just trial and error.  It is loosely based upon the "Solar Rollers" which we helped to design for SolarAid to charge mobile phones at festivals.

Camp

Due to leaving things right to the last minute the solar system was one of the last bits of the landcruiser to finish before we left, this meant that the “trail” would actually be the trip!

Solar Powered Landcruiser

So why are we using Solar on our vehicle?

We want to show people including car manufacturers the power of Solar Photovoltaics.  This technology has been around for over 20 years but is only now maturing and becoming economically viable.

While we do need to use are cars less (particularly in towns), share journeys with others and drive more efficiently, behaviour of the "average Joe" is not going to stop him / her using their individual car in the near future.  This means that the technology has to change dramatically in order to help reduce the impact of climate change.  Banning cars is something that no politician would ever dream of.
